8am. A highly skilled
professional walks onto the practice fairway to work with his watchful teacher
in making the most subtle swing change. 9am. A slightly nervous lady shakes
hands with her new teacher ready to embark on her first lesson. 10am. A man who
has played golf for 25 years tells his teacher that he just can’t seem to hit
the ball any more and wants to give the game away. For the rest of the day the
people, their problems and needs vary widely. There is only one constant, the
teacher, Mark Gibson. A teaching professional who not only has the credentials
to teach but is passionate about teaching. Mark turned professional in 1980 and has been the chosen professional of seven Queensland Golf Clubs. But it is Mark’s love of teaching, and commitment to himself learning and improving his teaching techniques, that sets him apart. The culmination of over 20 years of looking for and implementing the ‘best of the best’ teaching methods was the 1999 Australian PGA Teacher of the Year Award. Mark became the only dual winner of PGA Teacher of the Year when he won the award again in 2002. The Person.... Mark works with golfers of all ability and adjusts his teaching accordingly. But Mark also cares greatly about his students. Their progress, their enjoyment of the game, their achievement of personal and golfing goals. He’s not Mr. Gibson, or Mark to his students, he’s a friend, ‘Gibbo’. Mark’s coaching is based on a holistic philosophy ensuring every student achieves long term benefit from their tuition. This includes use of Neurolinguistic Profiling which facilitates direct communication to the student’s best learning vehicle. He also employs extensive Video Analysis, Computer Analysis and Swing Drills to accelerate student improvement. State of the art coaching aids such as interactive computer Swing Comparison are also utilised. The Basics... The student is presented with the basics, grip, posture and balance and encouraged to focus on their importance and interdependencies. He or she is educated to know not only know what to do, but why and how. This leads to a greater commitment to playing each shot correctly. Teacher and student work together to identify causes not effects.
